Smoky topaz is a shadowy but translucent mineral, dark clear brown ranging to a semi-translucent black. The topaz stone in its most pure form is totally colorless, and so it gets its vibrant colors from other inclusions of minerals. The word topaz could come from a Sanskrit word that means "fire," which is appropriate when thinking about this smoky topaz. You could string these smoky topaz beads with sunstone and red coral beads for a necklace, set of earrings, or bracelet that represents a fire.
Smoky topaz is the alternate name for this gemstone. These smoky topaz beads might also be called smoky quartz beads, because when scientists first discovered the stone, they misnamed it topaz when it was actually quartz.
