Turquoise beads are a staple decoration for many cultures, but perhaps none so well known as the Navajo. The turquoise stone, according to Navajo legend, is said to have formed from the Navajo people's tears of joy that would fall when the precious rains came. Turquoise is the English name, from French "turques" which refers to the Turkish people who are believed to have introduced turquoise to Europe, but the Native American words for the turquoise gemstone are translated into such poetic names as "fallen sky stone." Navajo jewelry that features turquoise also tends to use silver settings for bracelets, earrings, or necklaces.
