Sugilite gem was first discovered in Japan by a scientist looking for oil. His first thoughts probably weren't that this particular gemstone could be turned into sugilite beads, but that this was simply yet another brownish-yellow rock. It took 55 years for a significant deposit of pure sugilite stone to be discovered, which attracted the attention of investors. Sugilite was then classified as a rare gemstone, and its price skyrocketed.
Today, we use sugilite in jewelry crafting in the form of pendants, cabochons and beads to create stunning bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Its color varies depending on how much manganese is present in the stone. More manganese leads to a deeper purple, but sugilite can also have deep blue and black colors.
